As first responders, we all face the potential for the negative effects of traumatic incident stress. The mere fact that we run to violent situations that the general public would run away from shows that we are wired differently from the flock. But, this difference also carries the potential for trouble if we don’t constructively mitigate the negative side effects. We have all heard about the negative impact and implications of alcohol use and abuse. We live in a society that has given us a barrage of billboards, commercials, and news clips about the misuse of this potentially deadly drug. It has been called the most deadly drug in America; however, it is still constantly abused by people in all aspects of life regardless of a person’s socio-economic status, race, religion, or profession. Even we, as first responders aren’t immune to its life-changing effects. We are called to a higher standard and alcohol abuse by another first responder either has or will have some type of impact on you at one point or another in your career. This presentation isn’t here to scare you into responsible drinking but to help you make better choices concerning alcohol use and our responsibilities as first responders to ourselves, our department, and our families.
Lesson Objectives:
-
To identify stressors common to first responders.
-
To understand how to address and mitigate the effects of traumatic incident stress
-
To promote an understanding of the seriousness of our alcohol problem.
-
To warn of the dangers of persistent alcohol abuse.
-
To discuss killing from a certain philosophical view.
-
To alert first responders of the need to watch out for their peers.
As first responders, we all deal with the after effects of hypervigilance and the increased stressors of society as a whole. But, compassion fatigue affects those special few that deal entirely or in part with assisting the hurting. This training is about you and how to mitigate the effects of this field.
Lesson Objectives:
-
To promote the need for training in Compassion Fatigue.
-
To explain compassion fatigue and other terms associated with it.
-
To give instruction on Self Care techniques for mitigation of compassion fatigue.
We provide training in developing, cost considerations, selecting team members, and training your peer support team for success. I can come to your department to train and consult your team or I can do this through Zoom if necessary.
•We will discuss:
